This is a new piece by Christine Frerichs from her "Viewfinder" series. In naming the series, Frerichs references the physical act of framing a composition from life by using a classic viewfinder, a rectangular hole cut in a hand-held piece of paper. In that sense, the viewfinder becomes a metaphor for both the value of subjectivity as well as the problem of representation. In the case of many of her works, Frerichs uses both words and image; beginning each work by writing her immediate thoughts in a stream of consciousness onto the back of each blank surface.
