Amir Guberstein (b. 1985, Israel) lives and works in New York. His paintings begin with a central gesture, fundamentally black and white and containing sand from both his homeland Israel and Palestine mixed into the paint. Out of this duality of light and darkness an expressionist force works to form a composition that balances surface tension and textural escape. Guberstein's approach rests at the intersection of Impressionism's pursuit of trapping luminosity and Expressionism's unfurling of the unseen inner scape.
